3rd & Fernwood

$2.00

This soulful black-owned restaurant, located in the Midtown area, offers some non-traditional takes on Southern food with interesting names, such as “Beets Bama” and “Field Pea Mafe”, and a section of appetizer-like items called “Larder”, which I had to look up the meaning of. On their website, they tout themselves as a “Southern, seasonal restaurant, where culinary excellence meets the heartwarming flavors of the South”. They have traditional southern protein entrees such as Smoked and Brined Chicken and Pan Seared Trout and they have a great mac-and-cheese, served in a cute tin bowl. They also happen to offer one of my favorite burgers in Charlotte, the Double-cheese Smashburger. It is owned by Greg Collier, a James Beard Award–nominated chef and his wife, Subrina Collier. (They also own another great brunch spot in South End called Uptown Yolk.) Their culinary skills are amazing a clever based on the various things I’ve ordered or tasted on their menu. You should also give them a try. (And there’s a beautiful mural on the wall you should take a view of as well if you get the chance!)
